For over four decades, Taylor’s higher education division has taken on the mantle of developing the nation’s youth into well-rounded, competitive and resilient human capital, contributing towards the development of Malaysia’s economic growth and prosperity. From its humble beginnings to its rise into a trademark of excellence and a global brand name, Taylor’s has scaled greater heights, constantly expanding its developmental horizons to stay abreast with the times.
Taylor's College started out in a small building in Jalan Pantai, Kuala Lumpur, offering the Victorian High School Certificate (VHSC) programme for a student population of 345. Since then, it has expanded to include Taylor’s College Subang Jaya (launched in 1989), Taylor’s College Petaling Jaya (launched in 1992), Taylor’s College Sri Hartamas (launched in 2008) and Taylor’s University at the brand new Lakeside Campus (launched in 2010), with regional offices in Penang, Johor Bahru, Kuantan, Sabah and Sarawak.
A host of other programmes were introduced, including the South Australian Matriculation (SAM), Canadian Pre-University (CPU), American Degree Programme (ADP), Cambridge A Levels and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) as well as a comprehensive range of tertiary studies in fields such as Architecture, Design, Computer Science, Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Biosciences, Law, Business, Communications as well as Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts and Medicine.
Achievements
Taylor’s has continuously provided excellent services for its students in terms of diverse study options, relevant curriculum and teaching methods, ongoing partnerships with leading universities worldwide, strong industry linkages, up-to-date facilities and well-equipped campuses.
In 2006, Taylor’s was officially granted ‘University College’ status, which resulted in two distinct identities under the tertiary arm of Taylor’s: Taylor’s College, which hosts all the Pre-University and transfer programmes, and Taylor’s University College, which hosts tertiary and post-graduate programmes.
Taylor’s was honoured with the Brand Excellence Award at the Industry Excellence Awards in 2008. This is a prestigious award by the Ministry of International Trade & Industry Malaysia (MITI) in recognition of industry excellence for the recipients. The award is certainly a feather in the cap for Taylor’s, and reinforced its already strong presence in the education industry.
Taylor’s currently boasts as the largest Pre-University centre in Malaysia as well as the largest and most established hospitality and tourism management school in Southeast Asia - Taylor’s School of Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts (TCHT). A shining star among the array of programmes at Taylor’s, TCHT won two major awards for its excellence in hospitality & tourism education and commitment to grooming professionals for the industry – the PATA (Pacific Asia Travel Association) Gold Awards 2008 (Education and Training category) and the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards (HAPA) for Hospitality School of the Year 2007-2008.
In response to the nation’s goal of becoming a regional centre of education excellence and the pressing need for knowledgeable human capital, Taylor’s took the initiative to build Malaysia’s first state-of-the-art modern tropical university campus. The first phase of the project, known as Taylor’s Lakeside Campus, opened in January 2010, catering to a vibrant staff and student community amidst a stimulating academic environment surrounding a panoramic 5.5 acre lake and modern tropical architecture that encourages intellectual engagement. Set on 27 acres of tropical greenery, the RM450 million campus houses all of Taylor’s tertiary and post-graduate programmes and also serves as Taylor’s flagship campus.
In April 2010, Taylor’s launched its own PhD Fellowships for outstanding scholars in the fields of Engineering, Science and Hospitality & Tourism. This follows the Government’s vision of producing 60,000 PhD holders by 2020. Taylor’s added another feather to its cap in July 2010 when it was rated as ‘Tier 5: Excellent’ by the Ministry of Higher Education in the 2009 Malaysian Qualifications Agency Rating System for Malaysian Higher Education Institutions (SETARA ’09), which measures the quality of teaching and learning at the undergraduate level in universities and university colleges in Malaysia.
The most significant milestone in Taylor’s history so far arrived on 29 September 2010, when it was officially upgraded to University status. This recognition is a boost for Taylor’s to continue upholding the quality of its teaching and learning environment to fulfil the holistic needs of its students and meet Malaysia's agenda of a world-class, high income economy.
